Curriculum – Geography

Geography At Cestria

Home is where the heart is, and there is nowhere more special to us than Chester-le-Street. So where better to start that studying our local area. Our children embrace the locality and we can often be found out and about it our wonderful local area studying the river, the park or surveying the front street.

At Cestria our bespoke Geography curriculum equips pupils with knowledge about, not only the local area but diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, as well as developing a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.

New knowledge builds upon prior learning taught through specific subject skills. All of our lessons focus on one or more of the following strands –

  • Locational knowledge
  • Place knowledge
  • Human and physical geography
  • Geographical skills and fieldwork

Throughout both key stages, our children revisit elements of the curriculum, each time with a developing geographical knowledge base, a greater level of understanding and more advanced geographical skills.

We do this through our continuous provision for Geography.  Like many of our curricular areas, we have developed a continuous provision document which, for geography, focuses on map skills.

We have created bespoke maps for each year group which build up knowledge as they progress through school. Starting with Reception and the 4 countries of the UK to Year 6 with local and national landmarks, counties and rivers on. Of course, Chester-Le-Street is at the heart of each map bringing all of the learning back home.
