Curriculum – Maths

Maths At Cestria

Maths is taught every day in every year group. We initially based our teaching on a published maths scheme, however, we have now sprinkled our own bit of Cestria magic onto the scheme to make it bespoke to the needs of our children.

Staring Points: We want our children to be confident mathematicians. Each new unit starts with a refresher teaching point – 1,2 and 3 star activities then identify the starting point for each child to work through, building on prior learning and leading to problem solving activities.

Maths Continuous Provision:

It is important to us that our children can use and apply their learning in real life situations. Our continuous provision programme enables the children to do just that…

Time – From Reception to Year 6, we teach time across the day. Every classroom has 4 clocks with the children being taught both analogue and digital time in 12 and 24 hour. We build on prior learning by constantly revisiting previous year groups time objectives as well as focusing on their own.

Measurement: The measurement element of maths is taught in our fantastic cookery room. The children practise all elements of measurement then apply the skill through cookery. The children enjoy measuring and weighing ingredients to make some tasty treats!

Practical maths, especially measurement, is also applied in our Invention Shed. Our children love visiting the Invention Shed where the get to apply their skills of measuring to cut lengths of wood etc when making objects that they have designed as part of their DT projects.
